I am just your average suburban wine mom, juggling the school run and googling how to get stains out of a cream carpet. I started running about 20 months ago, for the first time in my life. Why? because my sister is a pretty freaking good athlete, I wasn’t in the best of places at the time and there was a bit of an intervention. Long story short she encouraged me to start running. It got me out of the house.
So I started running on a 1km loop in the local reserve where no-one could see me. I was an absolute mess. Let me give you the tip friends the first couple of months was bloody awful, I thought I was going to meet Jesus or my lunch every time I ran. 2 months after starting I ran my first 5k race with my sister.
Since then I have finished 2 half marathons and a couple of 5 and 10 km races. Ive managed to shift that pesky baby weight that I thought was going to stick around until kiddo went to college.
Since starting running I have slowly crawled out of the hole and found myself and my strength again.
I love running…. It brings a smile to face, always. Well not on track day. Theres a lot of swearing when I do speed work, but I always feel better at the end of it. I am by no means the best runner out there, nor the fastest, but I run with my heart. I am free when I run!! I am able to let go and just be me. Running has taught me so much about myself and given me back so much of what I somehow lost or weren’t brave enough to believe.
So what’s next?
I want to document my lacklustre runs and make them sound way more epic than in reality! Surviving the next school holidays and getting training done with life throwing curve balls. You know, that thing moms do. We basically just wing it…. but with regards to running; I will be running the City to Surf in September 2016, The Taniwha in November 2016 and working on getting some abs… but I will probably only succeed in 2 of these.
