Most of us runners will have heard of the ‘long run’, that secret weapon which takes your running chops to the next level. Well the ‘long run’ is something we hold dear at NZTRAILRUN, and something we want to celebrate and showcase. The world knows that New Zealand has a heap of amazing trails. Some are in the hard to reach back-country, some are a short drive from home, and some are right on our doorstep. Whichever part of the country you are in you can guarantee that somewhere, not too far away, is a single-track just waiting to be explored!

The Department of conservation has done a fantastic job in providing maps, information, and interpretation on many of these tracks. We want to show things a little differently.

Our vision is to showcase some of New Zealand’s amazing trails in a new light. We want to help inspire, inform, and encourage those contemplating a trail mission to get pumped up and go. For those who maybe aren’t as keen on running, you too can experience the wonderment, just sit back and enjoy.

Our focus at NZ TRAILRUN will be on trails and events over 20km, with particular interest in ultra distance trails. That said, if we really like something, we’re gonna go after it, so don’t be surprised if you see a 5km jaunt, or a 15km grind. If its great we will deliver it to you.

As part of our work we hope to foster some healthy competition among the trail community by hosting an FKT (Fastest Known Time) database. To be honest, you don’t even need to be the fastest runner on the block to hold an FKT record as there are very few documented records that we can find for NZ trails. Just pick a track with a vacant title, preferably over 20km for our database, and get out and claim it. Submit the details to us and bask in the glory of FKT infamy. Of course, if we haven’t got the info on an FKT and haven’t been able to find it, then it wont be on the database, so please let us know if you think you, or someone you know, holds an FKT on one of our glorious NZ trails.

We’re just a couple of ordinary 30 something guys, who work regular jobs, have young family’s, have to juggle everything that everyday people have to juggle, and like to run long in the wilderness. Follow us as we document our training, exploration, and journey to running ultra-distance trails in New Zealand’s beautiful mountains, valleys, and everywhere in-between.

More than anything, we want to help people enjoy, grow, and reach new frontiers in their running…

Check back often as we’ll be dropping gear reviews, race reports, interviews, blog posts, videos, FKT updates, and anything we think might be of interest to the trail community.
